College, the summer holidays, and my plans.

Introduction

Hello there, currently I am not in attendance of college, for I am on summer break for the next dew weeks. So in this little blog post I will be details what I will be up to, how college has been, how my work has been; and any other extra bits that may come to my mind. But before that I will want to say that I will try and post more and more to this website, because I do miss writting posts.

College

At my college I am taking a T-level course in computing. I have mixed feelings about my course, this is because it feels as if a lot of what we are being taught is out of date, and there are also some bits and pieces which have just been misinformation. For example, one of my tutors said that UNIX owns Linux and Linux owns Android, which even if it were a simplification is stupid. The GNU/Linux operating system is not even based on UNIX, no code from UNIX to my knowledge is found within the GNU/Linux operating system, this is because GNU/Linux is UNIX-like meaning that it is designed to act like UNIX. Another example of something which I disliked was when they were teaching us about phishing, and they gave us the classical education on the matter, the basics. Look for spelling mistakes, check links, all of that. However, in the year of our Lord 2026 we have Ai and spoofing, which can make phishing emails look rather real. On my work placement I received a better education on phishing emails, this is because in the training which I was given to do they had a white hack hacker showing how phishing works and it was rather interesting. I can go on about issues I have with the course.

Although I may have many parts of the course which I dislike, there are parts which I like. For example we as students were allowed to take apart computers and put them back together. When me and my friends did this we speed ran each other, this make putting the computers together and learning how the computers work very fun. We also for some reason learnt about windows servers. From what I did of the window server OS, Linux was way easier. Why would one require a GUI to use a server, sure maybe for visualizing data. But for everything, it is silly. Another part of this course which I like is the class is very small, with only nine students, myself included. This leads to the class being more quiet and I have found that I am most likely the loudest student which feels weird because I am not the most outspoken person.

I do feel unmotivated in my studies and I do think that in a way this course may have killed my love for tech. My course makes me come in daily to College which is fine, but some days it is nine to five and I just feel tired and miserable by the time I am home. However, I am guessing if you are reading this and have a job you feel the same. But lately within the last month or so my love for technology has been revived and as you will soon read I have many plans.

Work

Since I am on my T-Level course I do not get paid for working. This means that my work place gets me doing lame jobs, which I do not blame them for since I'm free labour. But at times I do get to do more advanced things. For example, I have became way more knowledgable (sadly) with the windows operating system, mainly with how to install it on problematic devices that do not want to work. This has lead me to learn more ways to enter the BIOS. This has helped me for when I installed GNU/Linux on my Vicar's laptop, since she has an old dell latitude.

Overall I enjoy work, my colleges are kind and the work place is far from toxic. Everyone is rather professional and there could be a chance in the future of me getting employed there. Hopefully I can because I would like to support my family and build up some money for when I do go and train for the priesthood.

Plans

Reforming the home server

I currently have Proxmox on my home server which takes up far too much space so I plan to install Debian on my home server since I do not host much anymore and I would like to have more space. I will install Jellyfin and Pihole and maybe one or two bits that seem interesting. Sadly I'm debating if I should cancel my VPS subscription since I do not do much with the VPS server anymore now that I have moved my email to a provider, since my website is just HTML and no JavaScript it would just be cheaper to host it on Gitlab like I used to do.

Website and media

Since I have a lot more free time, hopefully I can post more to this site, be that articles, or just general life updates. I will also hopefully write some scripts to some videos which I plan to publish on both Peertube and Youtube. The scripts will be published on this website with references if required so that you the viewer can fact check me.

Also as of 05/07/2026 which is tomorrow the website looks a lot different. This is because I'm tired with making my website look really pretty and taking ages to upgrade it. I do enjoy using 11ty but I just prefer using HTML and having a basic layout which I can quickly change since I have programmed the CSS to be easy to change. I do not want to be a webdev, I do not have an interest in becoming one and this is my website, so my rules.

Education

Whilst on my summer break I do plan to do a form of school. I do not want to get into much detail, but all the work will be done online and all the courses are free and the courses I have chosen are things I'm interested in. For example digital forensics, digital security, software law, and more. There are some courses I want to take which will just help me in general life such as essay writing, which is something I do not struggle with, but I would like to learn more about.

On top of the courses I would like to mess around with C++ or C, I did do this before. However, I was younger and less organised then I am currently. Hopefully I can mess around and maybe even improve upon my fakefetch program, make it a bit less cluttered, allow for a config file, and more informational.

Magazine

I may try do a sort of monthly magazine which goes over some software and some bits and paces like that. It would be free for anybody to download and I would probably either have all of the magazines in a git repo, or as a torrent. If people would like to contribute to the magazine if it turns out they like it they can submit a page or two and if the content is good I will add it. However, hopefully I can do it. Moreover I want to train my GIMP skills

Misc

I plan also to do some random things like getting back into skateboarding, or trying out TempleOS or even the modern fork which goes by ZealOS. I will also be doing some more book binding; currently I have three books of common prayer which need to be bound. Furthermore, since a lot of the people I want to bind for are vegan I have ordered some faux leather. Faux leather is weird to work with, but I do not want to disgust those who I bind for.

Conclusion

I doubt anybody reads these posts save two people I know. If you are not one of those people welcome and thank you for reading. I do hope you have a good day!
