Summer update and projects

What have I been up to?

Since my last post I have done a few bits. For example, me and my friend Gositi have started a project together! It is called ESSE. ESSE stands for Experimental System Shell Environment and it means something in Swedish, but I am not of that persuasion. So far ESSE has been going well; me and Gositi split the cost of it and manage it together as sudoers and so far no arguments, which is good. We both do our own little bits. I focus on the front end website, which is the homepage, the management of the web server and some security bits. It is a bit scary how many bots try to hack into the server.

ESSE project ideas

So for ESSE I do have some ideas, of which I will go into detail about. My first idea is programming some sort of bulletin board system for the users on the server, so any user can post something and you can comment on what has been posted. I would guess that would involve the use of some sort of database. Another idea would be having some form of media server on ESSE like Jellyfin. However, sadly as of right now we do not have enough storage to warrant it. There are countless things I want to do with ESSE, but we just need more people so we can grow it for me to do these things. Hopefully one day.

Dotfiles

At the start of summer I modified my dotfiles to more of my liking. I have changed my favourite colour from purple to orange, so I have had to update all of the configs to reflect that. I have also programmed a Debian install script. When I first ran it I was surprised how much did not fail. As of the current date the script works fine for any Debian-based system. In the future I think it would be good if I made a universal script which would detect which package manager you are using and just use that for installing the packages.

Also something rather random, a bit of a tangent if you will. Every few years I redo my bookmarks in my browser, so I have been amassing sites which I like and use. Maybe I will put them in my dotfiles. I do have a custom dotfiles install script for myself. This includes importing SSH keys, GPG keys, and all that good stuff, so I will get it working on that, then I will think about adding it to the main repo.

Programming and tech

I have been trying to do some self-education on programming and cyber security. I have been messing around with BlackArch and Kali Linux, pen testing my own sites and my friend's site. It has been interesting and I need to get more into it! I plan to start getting into digital forensics, maybe purchasing some drives from CEX and looking into them. The reason why CEX is because they test the drives work and they do not fully wipe them; I know this thanks to Archive Dive. I also want to learn how to use tools like Wireshark. Pen testing and this side of tech calls me, and hopefully I can explore cyber security more and more in the weeks to come.

I have also been doing some programming lessons on freeCodeCamp and boot.dev. For now it is mainly Python, cementing the theoretical part of programming into my mind. But I do plan to start learning more of the C programming language. I do have one project written in C called fakefetch, but that project is iffy. I need to make a project list of stuff I can program, just for learning's sake.

I have also been learning how to manage a Linux system, mainly through working with Gositi on ESSE, but also through a course on boot.dev. I have also been learning file manipulation and some other bits. I have also been messing with my home server, learning how to manage a home server more professionally in the long term.

Hardware

As of late I have been looking for a two-in-one laptop, that being a laptop which doubles as a tablet. I do not know the reason why I like the idea of a two-in-one laptop, but I just do. It also helps that I would be carrying about a portable Linux system with proper hardware support. So whilst looking into the world of two-in-ones I have found myself wanting to purchase a Microsoft Surface whilst using the Linux Surface project. So I have been keeping my eyes out on the high street and eBay for any Surfaces. Ideally I want a Surface Book 2 since it has really good Linux support. But we shall see what I get. I do not really mind if some bits do not work, like the camera, but I need the touch screen to work! Ideally when I do get this two-in-one I will install GNOME on it, because that is the only desktop environment which I see being a decent tablet environment. But of course I will install DWM alongside GNOME for when I want to use the keyboard.

Sadness

I have not been feeling too good as of late. I will not go into detail but there are a lot of factors, mainly a family member who is not doing well. This has all caused me to become a bit idle, maybe playing too many games. This has caused me to not do as much as I want to, like reading more, learning more, praying more. I know things will get better and I need to keep my spirits up, but I just need time. Hopefully soon I will be back to normal!

Conclusion

For now that is all. Thank you if you have read this. I do hope that you have a blessed day. Thank you again for reading my rant.
